The Surgical Technology program is a one-year course of study that begins in January and ends in December. This program trains students to work as a vital member of an operating room health care team. Courses are held on-campus and clinicals conducted at off-campus local hospital sites to enable students to have training in functional operating rooms.
Students must apply to the program. (NOTE: Upon acceptance, but prior to beginning the program, students must complete a successful background check and have immunizations for Measles/Mumps/Rubella (MMR), Chicken Pox, Tuberculosis, Diphtheria-Tetanus and Hepatitis-B series.) Persons interested in applying to the program are highly reccomended to begin as soon as possible as the Hepatitis-B series of immunizations takes several months to complete. Hepatitis-B is required by law in the State of Texas for all students involved in healthcare programs.
Only students who have been accepted into the program by the Director of Surgical Technology are allowed to register for the Surgical Technology classes.
What does a surgical technician do?
Surgical technicians assist in the operating room under the direct supervision of surgeons and registered nurses. Surgical technicians prepare the operating room by setting up equipment and surgical instruments using sterile techniques. The surgical technician passes instruments and other sterile supplies to the surgeon and assistants during surgery.
Job Opportunities
Employment for surgical technicians is expected to grow and job opportunities good. Primary employers are hospitals but is expected to grow in physician offices and outpatient care centers.
